My great-great grandfather Henry Clay Long owned a general store in rural Montgomery County (Tennessee), on the road from Clarksville to Lafayette, called Longbranch Store. Here is a snippet of the 1877 county map showing the store’s location along Fletcher’s Fork Creek:
The family home was situated across the Lafayette road from the store. I have a store ledger from this store dating to the 1910s that gives a glimpse into who the neighbors in the area were, and what kind of merchandise was available at the store. It’s a treasured family possession.
The house and the store were gone by the mid-1940s, cleared to make way for the Camp Campbell, now Fort Campbell, army post. This blog is a small way to keep that Longbranch name alive, and will be a way for me to share my genealogical musings with others. Enjoy!
